Brian Smith was the Director of Planning for Pinellas County for thirty years. He retired in November of 2011 with the commitment to continue to be involved in planning work without being a consultant for hire. Brian also served as the Executive Director of the MPO for over 30 years.
Brian had a key role in the Pinellas Trail from it's inception. He was a significant player in the development of the Friendship Trail and the Progress Energy Corporation extension of the Pinellas Trail. For his work with trails in the region and state he was recognized by the RTC as a Trail Champion in 2011.
Brian has a Masters Degree in Urban Regional Planning and a Bachelor's in Physics from the Florida State University. He is a Charter member of the American institute of Certified Planners and was inducted as a Fellow of the Institute for his contributions to the profession and community. He is also a Governor's appointee to the Florida Greenways & Trails Council and is the current chairman.
