FGTF and Wildlife Corridor Foundation Join Forces

Mallory Dimmitt, CEO of the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, recently met with the FGTF Board to discuss potential collaborations for a pilot project that aligns with the missions of both groups. Such a partnership will be a priority for our Foundation Board in 2023 and beyond. Opportunities may include a pilot project where the needs related to trails and those of the Wildlife Corridor intersect. Here are some key points:

  • Florida’s population increases by more than 350,000 people each year, creating an urgent race against time to preserve the land that must be conserved.

  • The Foundation's mission is to connect, protect, and restore lands for the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Mallory reviewed maps displaying conserved lands and areas with potential for conservation. The Florida Wildlife Corridor spans about 18 million acres, with 10 million already protected.

  • Approximately $1 billion in state funding is available this year for additional land acquisition programs in Florida. With this kind of financial backing, meaningful progress is being made. The program incorporates both land acquisitions and conservation easements. The Wildlife Corridor supports roughly 114,000 jobs and generates $30 billion in annual revenue. State agencies are increasingly emphasizing the importance of the Wildlife Corridor.

  • To protect wildlife such as Florida Panthers, Florida Black Bears, and various bird species, it is vital to acquire lands within a contiguous corridor rather than isolated parcels at risk of becoming wildlife islands surrounded by development.

  • There are 10 counties in Florida currently identified as hot spots where opportunities could soon be lost. These include areas in South Florida, Central Florida, and the Panhandle.

  • The Florida Wildlife Foundation will host a major event from September 26-28, 2023, in Orlando.

The FGTF Board supports the efforts of the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation and will continue seeking ways to mutually support each other’s missions and collaborate on projects.
